1882. The 3 bolt Denayrouze helmets made at the ‘Admiralty Izhora Workshop’

This early Russian diving helmet shows a close resemblance to the French Denayrouze helmet. However, the breastplate is more recent, but is still Russian in origin. The large nut on top is to seal off the telephone cable entering the helmet. Photographs David L.Dekker.

The first manufacturer to make diving apparatus on an important scale is the ‘Admiralty Izhora Workshop’. One of its major clients was the Kronstadt diving school, established in 1882. These first helmets were largely inspired by the French Denayrouze helmet.
